What you might see, and when
Wildlife at Langdale changes with the seasons. Here’s a gentle guide to some of the animals and birds you may spot during your stay. Nature doesn’t run to a timetable, but there’s always something special to look out for…
Spring (March – May) – New Life Everywhere
What you might see:
Otters in the lake and stream
Tawny owls nesting and feeding young (often visible on the owl box cameras)
Ducklings and goslings on the lake
Lambs in our field as well as nearby fields
Songbirds busy in the hedgerows
Deer more visible in early mornings
Frogs & toads near water edges
Best times to watch:
Early morning and dusk around the lake and stream.
Summer (June – August) – Busy Days & Long Evenings
What you might see:
Otters in the lake and stream
Swallows & martins swooping over the lake
Kingfishers flashing blue along the stream
Dragonflies & damselflies around the water
Bats emerging at dusk
Otter signs along the stream (early morning or late evening)
Owls hunting at twilight
Best times to watch:
Late evening by the lake, or quietly from the Willow Hide.
Autumn (September – November) – Golden Light & Quiet Moments
What you might see:
Otters in the Lake and Stream
Deer in the fields during the rut (often heard before seen!)
Migrating birds passing through
Hedgehogs feeding before winter
Waterfowl gathering on the lake
Foxes more active at dusk
Tawny Owls hunting earlier as evenings draw in
Best times to watch:
Late afternoon into early evening as the light softens.
Winter (December – February) – Quiet, Atmospheric Watching
What you might see:
Tawny owls visiting boxes
Water birds on the lake
Robins, finches & tits around feeders
Foxes and deer more visible against frosty fields
Winter visitors have included Cormarant and a Swan!
Occasional otter visits captured on the cameras
Best times to watch:
Mid-morning on frosty days, and dusk via the wildlife cameras.

Our cameras along the stream, around the lake and inside the owl boxes often capture:
Night-time visits from foxes, deer and hedgehogs
Owls feeding young in spring and summer
Birds bathing and drinking throughout the year
The occasional surprise guest passing through!
