Meet the Animals

Life at Langdale is shaped by the gentle presence of the animals that share the smallholding and surrounding fields. From the donkeys, goats, sheep and chickens that bring a sense of rural rhythm to the days, to the quiet comings and goings of wildlife around the lake and stream, the land here feels alive in a wonderfully natural way. Guests often enjoy simple moments such as greeting the animals on a morning wander, watching them graze in the fields, or pausing to take in the peaceful countryside sounds. Alongside the wild visitors captured on our cameras, the animals at Langdale help create the relaxed, authentic countryside atmosphere that makes a stay here feel both grounding and memorable.

Our donkeys roo & BET

Roo and Bet are our lovely miniature donkies and very much part of life here at Langdale Barn. They’ve been with us since 2022, having come to us from the Miniature Pony Centre when it sadly had to close. The girls are sisters — Roo was born in 2011 and Bet in 2008.

They’re used to being around people and are gentle, friendly characters. If you’d like to spend a little time with them — whether that’s giving them a gentle stroke or helping with some light grooming — just let us know and we’ll be happy to arrange a visit.

And for those feeling energetic, you’re even welcome to lend a hand with the mucking out — it’s surprisingly therapeutic! 😊

our sheep

We currently have eight ewes (female sheep) here at Langdale Barn. Six of them are part of our breeding flock each year, while two are now happily retired.

All of our ewes have names, and one in particular is especially friendly. Madge was hand-reared by us and, if she had the choice, would probably move into the house! You may also meet Lily, KD, Dora, Dot, Aerial, Frankie and QP during your stay.

Depending on the time of year, the ewes may have their lambs with them. Lambing takes place in April, and the lambs usually stay with us until around October, so spring and summer guests are often lucky enough to see them growing and playing in the fields.

our goats

We have four pygmy goats here at Langdale. Don’t let their small size fool you — while they’re full of character, goats can be lively, and as they still have their horns, they can pack quite a punch when playing.

For everyone’s safety, we don’t allow guests to enter the goats’ enclosure.

You’re very welcome to feed the goats, and we’re happy to supervise and provide the appropriate treats so they can be enjoyed safely.

They’re real characters, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot Boris enthusiastically practising with his punching bag — a firm guest favourite!

our chickens

We are home to ten friendly rescue hens who live in their own enclosure behind the Lodge, complete with an adjoining garden area to roam. They were rehomed through the Hen Welfare Trust after their commercial laying lives, and now enjoy a far more relaxed and happy retirement here on our smallholding.

Hens typically live for two to four years, and while they are with us they often provide a lovely supply of fresh eggs, available from the honesty box at the front of the property. If you notice the “Hens on Holiday” sign, it simply means the girls are enjoying a well-deserved rest from laying.
