A short break in Devon offers the perfect opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park. With its dramatic granite tors, winding rivers and wide open moorland, Dartmoor feels wild, peaceful and timeless.

Guests staying at Langdale Barn or Langdale Lodge are ideally positioned to explore the northern edge of the moor, with many of the most spectacular landscapes just a short drive away.

Day One – Exploring the Northern Moor

Start your visit in the historic market town of Okehampton, often described as the gateway to Dartmoor. The town has a number of independent shops and cafés and makes a good starting point for exploring the moor.

From Okehampton, drive a few minutes to Meldon Reservoir. This beautiful reservoir sits in a dramatic valley surrounded by steep hills and granite outcrops.

A circular walk around the reservoir is perfect for an easy introduction to Dartmoor. The views from the dam are particularly impressive and the area is popular with walkers and photographers.

In the afternoon, head towards one of Dartmoor’s famous tors. The climb to Yes Tor is one of the most rewarding walks on the moor. At over 600 metres above sea level it provides spectacular views across Devon and, on clear days, towards the distant coastline.

Day Two – Wildlife and Quiet Valleys

Dartmoor is also an excellent place for wildlife watching. Buzzards are often seen circling above the hills and deer sometimes appear along woodland edges.

Early morning or evening walks provide the best opportunities to see wildlife.

After a morning exploring the countryside, finish your trip with lunch at a traditional Devon pub.

The nearby The New Inn Sampford Courtenay is well known locally and offers a warm welcome to visitors.
