Our before & after story of the CREATION of Langdale Barn and langdale lodge
The birth of Langdale Barn
The transformation of Langdale Barn is a story of breathing new life into a much-loved but dilapidated old agricultural building. What was once a weathered stone and cob barn with a fragile lean-to stood quietly adjacent to Langdale House 2019, when work began to carefully and thoughtfully reimagine it as a welcoming countryside retreat. The journey started with the removal of the old lean-to and the careful stripping away of the original asbestos roof, clearing the way for a complete rebuild that respected the barn’s character while bringing it firmly into the present.
From there, new foundations were laid for a rear extension, followed by a new floor slab, walls and a completely new roof. Inside, the structure was carefully formed with new internal stud work and finishes, while outside the barn was rendered and painted to sit gently within its rural surroundings. The grounds were transformed too, with the addition of a spacious patio, dedicated parking, and a walkway leading into the flower meadow at the rear. Today, Langdale Barn stands as a beautiful holiday home, offering comfort, character and a sense of calm — a thoughtful blend of its agricultural past and its new life as a place to relax and unwind in the Devon countryside.
THe renovation of Langdale LOdge
Langdale Lodge has a story that begins by the sea. Originally a seaside holiday chalet brought from Dawlish Warren to Langdale in the 1980s, it served for many years as ancillary accommodation for family members at the main house. Over time, however, the chalet fell into disuse and by the time we purchased the property in 2017, it had become tired and in need of a complete transformation. In 2020, we began the careful renovation that would reimagine the chalet as the peaceful countryside retreat it is today.
The first step was to create the generous deck overlooking the flower meadow, establishing the lodge’s connection with the surrounding landscape, followed by extending the roof to both the front and rear to provide sheltered outdoor areas. Internally, the lodge was completely stripped back, with new insulated floors, walls and roof installed to ensure year-round comfort. The original felt roof was replaced with a beautiful cedar shingle roof, while the property was fully replumbed, rewired and thoughtfully reconfigured to create the calm, inviting space guests now enjoy. Although we hoped to retain the original timber cladding, its condition meant it had to be fully replaced, leaving the external shell as the only remaining part of the original structure. A private parking space was also created to the side of the lodge, accessed via the main yard, giving guests a secluded setting with exceptional views across the surrounding countryside.
More recent additions include an electric car 13 amp charging point.
